Hypochaeris radicata Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 811. 1753.
"Habitat in Europae cultioris pascuis." RCN: 5913.
Lectotype (Scott in Bosser & al., Fl. Mascareignes 109: 28. 1993): Herb. Linn. No. 959.5 (LINN) .
Generitype of Hypochaeris Linnaeus (vide Green, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 178. 1929).
Current name: Hypochaeris radicata L. ( Asteraceae).
Note: Hypochaeris glabra was treated as the generitype by Britton & Brown (Ill. Fl. N. U. S., ed. 2, 3: 309. 1913; see McNeill & al. in Taxon 36: 374. 1987). However, under Art. 10.5, Ex. 7 (a voted example) of the Vienna Code, this is a type choice made under the American Code and is to be replaced under Art. 10.5b by Green’s choice (Prop. Brit. Bot.: 178. 1929) of H. radicata L.
Grierson (in Dassanayake & Fosberg, Revised Handb. Fl. Ceylon 1: 270. 1980) and Alavi in Jafri & El-Gadi, Fl. Libya 107: 348. 1983) both treated unspecified material in Herb. Clifford (BM) as the type. However, there are two sheets associated with this name, evidently not part of a single gathering, and Art. 9.15 therefore does not apply. Consequently, Scott’s typification appears to provide the earliest explicit choice.
