Hedysarum heterocarpon Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 747. 1753.
"Habitat in India." RCN: 5512.
Lectotype (Pedley in Dassanayake & Clayton, Revised Handb. Fl. Ceylon 10: 168. 1996; Pedley in Turland & Jarvis in Taxon 46: 471. 1997): Herb. Hermann 2: 32, No. 294, left specimen (BM-000621619) .
Current name: Desmodium heterocarpon (L.) DC. ( Fabaceae: Faboideae).
Note: Although Meeuwen & al. (in Reinwardtia 6: 93. 1961) interpreted the name in the sense of the Hermann material, they did not designate a type. Schubert (in Milne-Redhead & Polhill, Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Leguminosae 3: 462. 1971) indicated Hermann material in three volumes of the herbarium (BM) as syntypes, and has been followed by authors such as Ohashi (in J. Jap. Bot. 66: 17. 1991). Pedley (in Dassanayake & Clayton, Revised Handb. Fl. Ceylon 10: 168. 1996) indicated Herb. Hermann material (BM) as “type”, without distinguishing between the specimens in different volumes of the collection. However, as it appears to have been part of a single gathering, Pedley’s is accepted as the first typification (Art. 9.15), with the choice subsequently restricted by the same author.
