Hypochaeris pontana Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 810. 1753.
"Habitat in Sabaudiae montibus." RCN: 5910.
Lectotype (Greuter in Willdenowia 33: 233. 2003): [icon] " Hieracium montanum Endiviae folio" in Boccone, Mus. Piante Rar. Sicilia: 148, t. 113. 1697.
Current name: Crepis pontana (L.) Dalla Torre ( Asteraceae).
Note: The specific epithet was spelled “pontana” in the protologue, argued by Sell (in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 71: 251. 1975) as an error for “montana” . As “montana” was already pre-occupied in Crepis, Sell coined C. bocconei (as “bocconi”) as a nomen novum. However, Greuter points out that Linnaeus used “pontana” consistently throughout his works, and this spelling of the epithet was also taken up by many subsequent authors, in several genera. Greuter argues that it cannot be treated as a correctable error, and that C. pontana is the correct name.
