Nomina dubia

The condition of the type specimens is not given for the species of Micromyinae in the list that follows. Those specimens were studied by Jaschhof (2010) and returned separately to ANIC.

adusta Skuse, 1888: 82, Cecidomyia (Diplosis) . Holotype male, “Woronora (Masters and Skuse). October”, in ANIC. The pinned type lacks its head and abdomen. Skuse (1890: 378) corrected himself and stated that his original type was a female and not a male, but that is not possible to check now. He then described the male on the basis of additional dried specimens still in the Skuse pinned collection in ANIC but we cannot determine now that they are the same species as his original specimen. Placed with nomina dubia by Gagné (2004: 283).

albulipennis Skuse, 1890: 378, Cecidomyia (Diplosis) . Syntypes, male(s) and female(s), “ Sydney (Skuse); Dunoon, Richmond River, NSW (Helms); Burpengary, near Brisbane, Queensland (Dr. T. L. Bancroft), one specimen in Coll . Queensland Museum. February to April.” In ANIC, we found three specimens: one labelled “ Dunoon " and two without locality data, none of the three with its abdomen. The specimen collected at Burpengary is not part of the Queensland Museum collection, and is presumably lost. Placed with nomina dubia by Gagné (2004: 283).

amplipennis Skuse, 1888: 142, Campylomyza . Declared a nomen dubium by Jaschhof (2010: 37). No insects were attached to the pins in NHMW.

araneosa Skuse, 1888: 82, Cecidomyia (Diplosis) . Holotype female, “ Elizabeth Bay (Skuse). October “, in ANIC . In the original description the type is stated as male but Skuse (1890: 378) corrected himself and wrote that his original type was a female. The mounted holotype retains its wings, shrivelled postabdomen that appears barely protrusible, with two large cerci, one 4-segmented palpus, one antenna with 12 flagellomeres, but no legs. It belongs to the Cecidomyiidi but lacks distinctive morphological characters on preserved body parts to place it further. This species was moved to “ Unplaced Cecidomyiinae ” in Gagné (2004). We now consider it a nomen dubium. New status.

aurata Skuse, 1888: 129, Lasioptera . Holotype male, “Middle Harbour (Skuse). September”, in ANIC. The mounted specimen retains its terminalia and a claw and fits Lasioptera, but does not show special characters to distinguish it from other congeners. We consider this species a nomen dubium. New status.

brevipennis Skuse, 1888: 71, Cecidomyia (Diplosis) . Holotype male, “Elizabeth Bay (Masters). December“, in ANIC. The mounted type retains its wings, antennae with 12 binodal flagellomeres bearing one circumfilum on proximal and two on distal node, partially shrivelled head with occipital protuberance, 4-segmented palpi, simple tarsal claws, empodia as long as claws, pulvilli half length of claws, shrivelled terminalia with simple gonocoxites bearing no mediobasal lobes, distally tapered aedeagus and basally microtrichose gonostyli. It belongs to Cecidomyiidi but it has damaged terminalia and lacks distinctive morphological characters on other body parts to compare it to males from other genera and species. Moved to "Unplaced Cecidomyiinae " in Gagné (2004: 275), we now consider this species a nomen dubium. New status.

Skuse (1890: 377) identified five further specimens as this species: “Five old specimens recently found in the collection of the late Mr. W. S. Macleay belong to this species [ Cecidomyia (Diplosis) caeca], and are labelled “ Cecidomyia muscorum ”; on dead insects, N.S.W. I know nothing of this habit from personal observation.”. We have not found these specimens in ANIC. “ Cecidomyia muscorum ” was placed with nomina nuda by Gagné (2004: 286). Cecidomyia caeca was added to nomina dubia by Gagné (2004: 283).

dibapha Skuse, 1888: 98, Cecidomyia (Diplosis) . Syntype females, “ Illawarra district (Masters and Skuse); Coogee Bay (Skuse). September ”, in ANIC . Of the two pinned specimens in ANIC, we did not mount the one from Coogee Bay as it lacks its head and abdomen and has a wing colour pattern different from the other. The syntype from Illawarra district, which we mounted, retains all body parts except the tarsi. Assigned to unplaced Cecidomyiinae by Gagné (2004: 276), it belongs to Contarinia but lacks distinctive morphological characters to distinguish it from other congeneric females. We declare it a nomen dubium. New status.

difficilis Skuse, 1888: 63, Cecidomyia . Holotype female, “Elizabeth Bay (Masters). Beginning of January”, in ANIC. The mounted type specimen has preserved wings, damaged head capsule, 4-segmented palpi, antennae with 11 flagellomeres, the terminal twice as long as others, toothed tarsal claws, empodia as long as claws, preserved terminalia with eighth tergite split into two longitudinal sclerites, remaining body parts missing. This species belongs to Dasineura but lacks distinctive morphological traits to separate it from congeneric females. We move it here to nomina dubia . New status.

frequens Skuse, 1888: 99, Cecidomyia (Diplosis) . Syntypes, male and female, “Elizabeth Bay (Masters and Skuse). End of December”, in ANIC. Both types were mounted. The male has wings, head with 4-segmented palpi and occipital protuberance but without flagellomeres, legs with simple claws as long as empodia, and distorted terminalia with aedeagus missing. The female has all parts preserved, but with the ovipositor inside the abdomen and not properly examinable. This species was assigned to unplaced Cecidomyiinae by Gagné (2004: 277). It belongs to Contarinia but the types lack distinctive morphological characters on preserved body parts that can distinguish them from congeners. We place it with nomina dubia . New status.

Gonioclema Skuse, 1888: 60, as subgenus of Cecidomyi a. Type species, Cecidomyia pauxillula Skuse, 1888 (monotypy). Skuse (1888: Fig. 3) illustrated the wing showing R4+5 straight and joining C at wing apex, Rs closer to distal end of R1 than arculus, Cu simple and fading apically, wingfold fading basally and apically. He described female flagellomeres as subcylindrical, 11 in number. The description is ambiguous and the holotype has been mostly destroyed by insects (see Cecidomyia pauxillula listing in nomina dubia). Placed with nomina dubia by Gagné (2004: 282).

Female mounted: all body parts present except for legs, but ovipositor is shrivelled inside collapsed remains of abdomen; hooked setae, typical for Lasioptera, are present on cerci but their number and position are obscured. No other characters will allow one to distinguish the type from congeneric females. We move it here to nomina dubia . New status.

The mounted type retains a wing, head with 4-segmented palpi, occipital protuberance, antenna with 12 barrel-shaped flagellomeres, slightly narrowed at midlength, circumfila as sparse network of low loops, legs with claws (large, toothed, bent at basal third, empodia reaching bend in claws) and terminalia with large cerci bearing long simple setae and wide hyporoct with pair of short setae. This species was assigned to unplaced Cecidomyiinae by Gagné (2004: 279). It belongs to Cecidomyiidi but the type lacks special morphological characters that would distinguish it from other species. We move it here to nomina dubia . New status.

mollipes Skuse, 1888: 92, Cecidomyia (Diplosis) . Syntypes, male and female, “Sydney (Masters and Skuse)”, in ANIC. Neither type bears a locality label. We mounted both types. The male retains a wing, head with occipital protuberance, one palpus (with 4 segments), both antennae with scape and pedicel and first flagellomere on one (consisting of two nodes, one looped circumfilum on proximal and two on distal node), legs with claws (simple, thin, bent beyond midlength, longer than empodia), but is misssing the terminalia. The female has retained its wings, head with occipital protuberance, 4-segmented palpus, antennae with 12 flagellomeres, terminalia with large cercus (one missing). This species was assigned to unplaced Cecidomyiinae by Gagné (2004: 279). It belongs to Cecidomyiidi but the male type lacks terminalia and there are no special morphological characters on surviving body parts of either type that would distinguish it from other species. We place it here with nomina dubia . New status.

Necrophlebia Skuse, 1888: 111, as subgenus of Cecidomyi a. Type species, Cecidomyia volitans Skuse, 1888 (monotypy). Skuse (1888: Fig. 10) illustrated the wing showing R4+5 apically curved and joining C posteriad of the wing apex, Rs halfway between distal end of R1 and arculus, Cu simple and reaching wing margin, wingfold not visible. He described female flagellomeres as subcylindrical, 12 in number. This subgenus cannot be identified because the original description lacks important diagnostic characters and the pinned types of the only included species are damaged beyond recognition (see Cecidomyia volitans listing in nomina dubia). Placed with nomina dubia by Gagné (2004: 282).

nubilipennis Skuse, 1890: 375, Cecidomyia . Holotype female [mistaken for male by Skuse], “ Elizabeth Bay, near Sydney (Skuse). October. A single specimen taken on a window”, in ANIC . The type lacks the head but retains the thorax with three legs, and the abdomen with terminalia. In Notes and Exhibits of the Linnean Society of NSW (Anonymous 1893) this species is commented on: “Mr. Froggatt exhibited specimens of the galls of Cecidomyia nubilipennis, Sk., previously unrecorded, from Flemington [NSW], on the leaf-stalkes of Eucalyptus sideriphloia, and of the gnats bred therefrom”. Froggatt’s specimens were not found in ANIC. In view of the level of diagnostic capability at the time of Froggatt’s exhibition, we doubt that his specimens had more than a superficial resemblance to the holotype of C. nubilipennis that was taken on a window. This species was assigned to unplaced Cecidomyiinae by Gagné (2004: 280). We note here that it belongs to Asphondylia . Given that Asphondylia females mostly lack diagnostic characters to allow comparison with congeners, we place C. nubilipennis with nomina dubia . New status.

parilis Skuse, 1888: 87, Cecidomyia (Diplosis) . Holotype female, “Middle Harbour (Skuse)”, in ANIC. State of the holotype: wings well preserved; head shrivelled, one antenna with several flagellomeres present, palpi missing; only one mid- and one hindleg present; abdomen present with terminalia folded inside and details obscured. Skuse (1890: 380, Pl. XVI., Fig. 3 [Fig. 2 h]) assigned to this species four females (mounted by us) that were “Bred from irregular-oval, reddish-brown blisters, 3 to 4 mm. long, having an ochreous-yellow or pale brownish slit (1 to 1½ mm. in length) in the middle; occurring very numerously on the upper side of the leaves of Eucalyptus corymbosa, obtained by Mr. Froggatt, in November, at Weverly, near Sydney. The blisters extend through the leaf, being represented on the under side by very slightly raised brown patches. As many as forty or fifty blisters sometimes occur in one leaf; they are usually dispersed over the surface, but occasionally form clusters of three or four. It appears that the larvae abandon the blisters before assuming their next state; the presence of the longitudinal opening also supports this conclusion.” The four females taken from galls lack the terminalia but have well preserved heads with flagellomeres and wings, and one specimen has claws on at least one of each pair of legs. Their Rs vein lies midway between the arculus and the end of R1 and their claws are all toothed, unlike the holotype of C. parilis that has the Rs vein closer to the arculus and untoothed claws. Because of these differences it is clear that Skuse’s 1890 gall association was incorrect and the gallmaker of Eucalyptus corymbosa remains unnamed. Cecidomyia parilis is assigned here to nomina dubia . New status.

wildi Skuse, 1890: 387, Lasioptera . Syntypes, male and female, “Botanical Gardens, Brisbane, Q. (C. J. Wild). March. Specimens in Coll. Queensland Museum”, in ANIC, although originally indicated as in collection of the Queensland Museum. Only legs remain of the pinned female. The mounted male is well-preserved but shows no special characters to distinguish it from other Lasioptera males. We move it here to nomina dubia . New status.
