Recognition. In the key of Lundbeck (1922) to Group VI couplet 14 lead 1 M. propinqua (Wood), from which it differs in having spinose labella. In the key to the males of the British Isles (Disney, 1989) it runs to couplet 203, where neither option fits, or to couplet 228 lead 1 M. lata (Meigen) which it closely resembles except the latter is a very dark species. If one follows the note to this couplet one proceeds to couplet 238, lead 1 M. minor (Zetterstedt) which is likewise very similar except for its brown thorax, abdominal tergites, legs and haltere. Etymology. Named after Carl Kähler, who with his sister Gerda, founded 15-juni-fonden, a foundation that has helped Esben Bøggild purchase microscope equipment to facilitate his studies.
