Erythrina corallodendrum Linnaeus var. occidentalis Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 706. 1753.

RCN: 5175.

Lectotype (Wijnands, Bot. Commelins: 163. 1983): [icon] "Arbor Coral Americana" in Commelin, Hort. Med. Amstelod. Pl. Rar. 1: 211, t. 108. 1697.

Current name: Erythrina corallodendron L. ( Fabaceae: Faboideae).

Note: Krukoflf & Barneby (in Lloydia 37: 399-400. 1974) noted the existence of 888.2 and 888.3 (LINN) but did not accept them as original material. They conclude "it seems obvious that Commelin’s plate and description should be regarded as representing the plant Linnaeus had in mind when he described var. occidentalis ", but did not formally designate it as the type. This was done subsequently by Wijnands. The lectotype is an original element (and the type) of var. occidentalis. The autonym therefore has statutory priority over this name.
