Atopida waipoua sp. nov.

Type material. Holotype, male (NZAC): “Waipoua S.F. \ Auckland \ Prov. 19 Oct 67 \ J.C.Watt ”, “ Beating \ flowers”, “ Leptospermum \ scoparium”; paratypes, 14 exx. (NZAC): same data as holotype; paratype, 1 ex. (NZAC): “ NEW ZEALAND ND \ Waipoua \ Waipoua Stm \ 26 Nov 1980 \ T.K. Crosby ”; paratypes, 2 exx. (CMNC): “ NEW ZEALAND: N. Is. \ Waipoua S. Forest \ 20-23.XI.1981 \ H & A Howden”.

Diagnosis. Body small (TL 3.0– 3.3 mm), narrow. Setation of dorsum long, erect, pronotum widest in the middle of its length. Penis same width over the entire length, lateral sides subparallel, trigonium subtriangular, rounded at apex, slightly shorter than parameroids; pala rectangular, shorter than parameroids; tegmen rectangular, with triangularly pointed parameres.

Description. Male. Body elongated, small (TL 3.03–3.30 mm) and narrow. Body light brown, head, pronotum, and scutellar shield slightly darker than elytra, outer edges and adsutural portion of elytra often darkened, antennae darkening towards apices. Head and pronotum opaque, evenly covered with strong and dense, granulate, doughnutshaped punctures, punctures touching each other. Elytra shining, punctation on elytra simple, punctures separated by 0.5× diameter of a puncture. Body densely covered with moderately long, protruding, yellowish setae. Supraantennal ridges well-marked, not elevated. Pronotum widest in the middle of its length, sides curved, anterolateral angles slightly produced, posterolateral angles slightly obtuse. Elytra without carinae, humeri well-marked. Ventrite 5 rounded, apex delicately truncate. Penis (L 0.51 mm, W 0.17 mm) same width over the entire length, trigonium medium width, subtriangular, shorter than parameroids. Pala rectangular, slightly shorter than parameroids. Parameroids elongated, rectangular, apices wide, apical part covered with punctures. Tegmen (L 0.48 mm, W 0.21 mm) narrow, same width over the entire length, with triangular parameres, acute apices, scarce punctures and setae.

Female unknown.

Measurements and ratios. Males (n = 10) TL 3.03–3.30 mm (3.19 mm), PL 0.50–0.57 mm (0.55 mm), PW 0.87–0.97 mm (0.92 mm), EL 2.40–2.77 mm (2.59 mm), EW 1.40–1.53 mm (1.49 mm), TL/EW 2.07–2.29 (2.14), PW/PL 1.53–1.80 (1.68), EL/EW 1.60–1.84 (1.73), EL/PL 4.24–5.00 (4.74), EW/PW 1.56–1.73 (1.63).

Distribution. Known only from Waipoua State Forest in Northland area of North Island (Fig. 18L).

Etymology. After type locality, Waipoua State Forest, a well-known area of occurrence of well-preserved kauri forests.
