Genus Pholcus Walckenaer, 1805

Pholcus Walckenaer 1805: 80 . Type species Aranea phalangioides Fuesslin, 1775, by monotypy.

Diagnosis. This genus can usually be distinguished from all known genera of the subfamily Pholcinae by the presence of three pairs of apophyses (proximo-lateral, proximo-frontal, and disto-frontal; Figs 34, 42) on the male chelicerae, by the presence of a bulbal uncus and appendix (Figs 30, 40), and by the presence of a ‘knob’ on the usually sclerotized epigyne (Huber 2011a; see also Huber 2011a for a discussion on diagnostic characters in Pholcus, and reversals in some taxa).
