Quercus phellos Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 994. 1753.

"Habitat in America septentrionali." RCN: 7210.

Lectotype (Reveal & al. in Huntia 7: 233. 1987): Clayton 780 [ “906”] (BM-000051783; iso- LINN 1128.3).

Current name: Quercus phellos L. ( Fagaceae).

Note: Dandy (Sloane Herbarium: 112. 1958) designated two Catesby plates as the type for this name, and as they were sufficiently different to be treated as distinct, though unnamed, varieties by Linnaeus, they are evidently not part of a single gathering (Art. 9.15). The type is therefore that designated by Reveal & al. See also Howard & Staples (in J. Arnold Arbor. 64: 525. 1983).
