Hylesinus toranio (D’Anthoine, 1788)

Distribution in Iran. Iran (no locality cited) (Modarres Awal 1997).

General distribution. Europe, North Africa, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey. Introduced into Argentina, Chile, Japan. Taxonomy. This species has often been referred to in the literature as Hylesinus oleiperda (F.), but D’Anthoine’s description has priority (Lesne 1908; Wood & Bright 1992).

Biology. The species is a well-known pest of olive ( Olea europea) in the Mediterranean region, but also breeds in other Oleaceae ( Fraxinus, Syringa), and there are occasional records from other host trees (Stark 1952). It is recorded from Olea europea in Iran (Modarres Awal 1997). Russo (1932), Nuzzaci (1972) and Graf (1977) have made detailed studies of the biology of the species, including its natural enemies, and suggested possible control measures.
