Canthidium (Neocanthidium) foveolatum Harold, 1867
Canthidium foveolatum Harold, 1867a: 21 [here transferred to the subgenus Neocanthidium]. Type locality: Colombia, Brazil, and perhaps Mexico (“ Brasilien, Columbien und vielleicht auch Mexiko ”). Type material: Location of syntypes unknown. Distribution: Brazil (?) (Martínez & Halffter 1986a) [In his original description of C. foveolatum, Harold (1867a) cited his several specimens came from Brazil and Colombia; one sole vividly coloured individual was reported as coming from Mexico, a case of possible mislabelling. Nevertheless, Harold (1869a) restricted the known distribution of that species to Brazil, and this modification was followed by Gillet (1911), Blackwelder (1944), and Martínez & Halffter (1986a). Although no argument was given to support Harold’s (1869a) decision, here I decided to adopt it with certain reservation. It will be only when the type series is fully reassessed that we will know for certain whether Harold’s (1867) original type locality was correct or not].
