Rivina humilis Linnaeus var. scandens Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 122. 1753.

RCN: 1008.

Neotype (Greuter in Greuter & al., Fl. Republ. Cuba, ser. A, 6(3): 18. 2002): [icon] " Rivina " in Plumier, Nov. Pl. Amer.: t. 39, f. [3] a–g . 1703.

Current name: Trichostigma octandrum (L.) H. Walter ( Phytolaccaceae).

Note: Although Kellogg (in Howard, Fl. Lesser Antilles 4: 193. 1988) stated "Type: Plumier", the precise element intended is unclear. Linnaeus’ variety has Plumier’s " Rivina scandens racemosa, amplis solani foliis, baccis violaceis" as its diagnosis, but the illustration (t. 39) accompanying this 1703 work is for the genus as a whole, including both this and " Rivina humilis racemosa, baccis puniceis", so it cannot be assumed to depict only one of them, and cannot be regarded as original material for either. However, in the absence of original material for the name, Greuter’s treatment of the plate as the lectotype is accepted as a neotypification.
