Royena glabra Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 397. 1753.

"Habitat ad Cap. b. Spei." RCN: 3130.

Type not designated.

Original material: Herb. A. van Royen No. 941.6-396 [icon] (L); Herb. Clifford: 149, Royena 2 (BM) ; [icon] in Commelin, Hort. Med. Amstelod. Pl. Rar. 1: 125, t. 65. 1697; [icon] in Plukenet, Phytographia: t. 321, f. 4. 1694; Almag. Bot.: 391. 1696.

Current name: Diospyros glabra (L.) De Winter ( Ebenaceae).

Note: De Winter (in Dyer et al., Fl. Southern Africa 26: 63. 1963) indicated 570.3 (LINN) as lectotype, but this collection lacks the relevant Species Plantarum number (i.e. “2”) and was a post-1753 addition to the herbarium, and is not original material for the name. This was noted by Wijnands (Bot. Commelins: 94. 1983), who also suggested that there was a good specimen in the Clifford herbarium, but did not designate it as the type.
