Rubus fruticosus Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 493. 1753, typ. cons.
"Habitat in sepibus praesertim maritimis Europae." RCN: 3760.
Conserved type (van de Beek in Meded. Bot. Mus. Herb. Rijks Univ. Utrecht 415: 59. 1974; Weber in Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 106: 293, f. 1. 1986): Herb. Linn. No. 653.9, inflorescence only (LINN) .
Generitype of Rubus Linnaeus, nom. cons.
Current name: Rubus fruticosus L. ( Rosaceae).
Note: Rubus fruticosus, with the type designated by Weber, was proposed as conserved type of the genus by Jarvis (in Taxon 41: 573. 1992). This was eventually approved by the General Committee (see review of the history of this proposal by Barrie, l.c. 55: 795-796. 2006).
Rubus fruticosus has long been treated as an ambiguous name, and its type is identifiable with R. plicatus Weihe & Nees. Weber has provided a review, and restricted van de Beek’s (1974) type choice to the inflorescence only.
