Genus Colenis Erichson
Colenis Erichson, 1842: 221 . Type species: Anisotoma dentipes Gyllenhal (= Sphaeridium immundum Sturm [1807]) (des. in Thomson, 1859: 58, not stated as taxonomic change; two original species).
Distribution: 13 species—Holarctic, Neotropical (North and Central America).
Biology: Found on epigean fungi including mushrooms and bracket fungi in moist forests (Newton, 1984).
Note: Key to subgenera in Peck (1998). The subgenus Colenodes Peck, 1998 (= Carcharodes /Carcharodus HlisnikovskĂ˝, 1965, preoccupied) occurs in southwestern Europe only. All New World species were placed by Peck (1998) in the remaining subgenus Colenis s. str., although this was not indicated in Peck et al. (1998a).
