Holotype: UMMZ 57443.

Type locality: “Sabana de Mendoza (Trujillo State), Venezuela.”

Distribution: Northeastern Colombia and Northeastern Venezuela. In Venezuela, natural populations restricted to Maracaibo Lake Basin; introduced population established in Lago de Valencia, Carabobo State (Royero and Hernández 1996).
