TYPE LOCALITY: USA, Colorado, Bent Co., along prairie road to Bent's Fort, near present town of Las Animas .
DISTRIBUTION: SE Colorado and SW Kansas (USA) to C San Luis Potosi (Mexico).

COMMENTS: Subgenus Cratogeomys . Russell (1968b) delineated two subspecies groups, which are karyotypically distinct and may represent separate species (see Berry and Baker, 1972, and Lee and Baker, 1987). Reviewed by Davidow-Henry et al. (1989, Mammalian Species, 338, as Cratogeomys castanops); subspecies in the US were revised by Hollander (1990).
