Although this checklist documents a slight westward extension of the known range of Alaus oculatus (Linnaeus), the specimens collected in Montana are difficult to determine using the most recent species key due to the white ring around the eyespot merging with the lateral line (see couplet 7, Casari 2003), and is similar to Alaus lusciosus (Hope) from the southwestern US. However, male genitalia match Casari’s (1996) concept of A. oculatus .
