Distribution in South America: Atlantic Ocean, Brazil to Argentina, from 0º to 59ºS (Totton 1954; Alvariño 1971, 1981; Pugh 1999; Migotto et al. 2002; Silveira & Morandini 2011).

Habitat: neritic and oceanic species, widely distributed in tropical, subtropical and temperate waters (Alvariño 1971, 1981; Pugh & Gasca 2009).
