Lantana camara Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 627. 1753, typ. cons.

"Habitat in America calidiore." RCN: 4541.

Conserved type (Moldenke & Moldenke in Dassanayake & Fosberg, Revised Handb. Fl. Ceylon 4: 220. 1983): Herb. Linn. No. 783.4 (LINN) .

Generitype of Lantana Linnaeus, nom. cons.

Current name: Lantana camara L. ( Verbenaceae).

Note: Lantana camara, with the type designated by Moldenke & Moldenke, was proposed as conserved type of the genus by Jarvis (in Taxon 41: 564. 1992). This was eventually approved by the General Committee (see review of the history of this proposal by Barrie, l.c. 55: 795-796. 2006). Sanders (in Sida 22: 381-421. 2006) provided a detailed study of the type (illustrated on p. 384, f. 1), concluding that it belongs to the wild species and not to the cultigen to which the name has also been applied. As a result, he named the latter L. strigocamara R.W. Sanders.
