Myrtus cumini Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 471. 1753.
"Habitat in Zeylona." RCN: 3608.
Lectotype (Kostermans in Quart. J. Taiwan Mus. 34: 134. 1981; Verdcourt in Beentje, Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Myrtaceae: 72. 2001): Herb. Hermann 1: 45, No. 185, right specimen (BM-000621389) .
Current name: Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels ( Myrtaceae).
Note: The earliest type choice appears to be that of Kostermans who designated material in Herb. Hermann 1: 41 (BM) as the type. Presumably unaware of this, Scott (in Bosser & al., Fl. Mascareignes 92: 40. 1990) designated 637.10 (LINN) as type, but Parnell & Chantaranothai (in Thai Forest Bull., Bot. 21: 57. 1994) pointed out that this collection is not identifiable as S. cumini . Verdcourt subsequently restricted the type choice to one of the two collections on Hermann’s sheet.
