Magnolia acuminata (Linnaeus) Linnaeus, Systema Naturae, ed. 10, 2: 1081. 1759.
["Habitat in Pensylvania."] Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 1: 756 (1762). RCN: 3983.
Basionym: Magnolia virginiana L. var. acuminata L. (1753) .
Lectotype (Dandy, Sloane Herbarium: 112. 1958; Tobe in Hunt, Magnolias: 191. 1998): [icon] " Magnolia flore albo, folio majore acuminato baud albicante" in Catesby, Nat. Hist. Carolina 2, App.: 15, t. 15, open flower excluded. 1747.
Current name: Magnolia acuminata (L.) L. ( Magnoliaceae).
Note: Tobe (in Hunt, Magnolias: 191. 1998) provides an illustration of the lectotype, but argues that it is a chimaera, with the leaves of M. acuminata and an open, stylised flower of another species, which he excludes from Dandy’s original choice of the whole plate.
