Mimosa latisiliqua Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 519. 1753.
"Habitat in America calidiore." RCN: 7674.
Lectotype (de Wit in Taxon 10: 52. 1961): [icon] " Mimosa inermis, foliis bipinnatis, partialibus quinque jugis" in Plumier in Burman, Pl. Amer.: 3, t. 6. 1755.
Current name: Lysiloma latisiliquum (L.) Benth. ( Fabaceae: Mimosoideae).
Note: De Wit’s 1961 typification, using a Plumier illustration published by Burman in 1755, was rejected by Gillis & Stearn (in Taxon 23: 185-191. 1974) in favour of Herb. Linn. 1228.19 (LINN). However, de Wit (in Taxon 24: 349, f. 1,2. 1975) pointed out that this material conflicts with Linnaeus’ diagnosis and could not have been the basis of the name. Polhill & Stearn (in Taxon 25: 323-325. 1976) re-examined the question and concluded that de Wit’s objections were well founded, and that the Plumier element should indeed be the type. However, they treated Aubriet’s tracing (at Groningen) of Plumier’s original drawing as the type (rather than Burman’s published version, which was derived from the tracing).
