Anas oxyptera Meyen, 1834 a: 121, pl. 26.
Now: Anas flavirostris oxyptera Meyen, 1834a . See Hellmayr & Conover (1948a: 351).
Syntype: ZMB 13928 (Lichtenstein 1832, Nr. 82 or 83 sub “ Anas ”), skin, collected by Meyen in “ Maerz ” [= 27–31 Mar 1831; see below] in “ Peru ” [= Pichupichuni, Peru; see below].
Syntype: ZMB 13929 (Lichtenstein 1832, Nr. 82 or 83 sub “ Anas ”), skin, collected by Meyen in “ Maerz ” [= 27–31 Mar 1831; see below] in “ Peru ” [= Pichupichuni, Peru; see below].
Type locality. “ Perú ” according to Meyen (1834a: 121), who specified (p. 121–122) that “ Wir haben diese Ente häufig auf der Hochebene des südlichen Perú geschossen; besonders auf der östlichen Abdachung der Cordilleren, gegen den See von Titicaca zu” (“we have often shot this duck in the altiplano of southern Peru; mainly on the eastern slopes of the Cordilleras facing Lake Titicaca ”). In his travel report, Meyen (1834b: 475) further specified that he collected this duck at a village of “ Piche-Pichun ” [= Pichupichuni], which he visited during 27–31 Mar 1831. We thus ascertain the type locality as Pichupichuni, Puno Region, Peru [16.59°S, 69.38°W] .
Remarks. Meyen (1834a) did not specify the type series, but Lichtenstein (1832) listed the above two relevant specimens, which thus constitute the type series.
