Aquila braccata Meyen, 1834a: 65, pl. 8.

Now: Buteo polyosoma polyosoma (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) . See Hellmayr & Conover (1949: 85).

Holotype: ZMB 663 (Lichtenstein 1832, Nr. 51 sub “ Falco pterocles ”), skin, collected by Meyen in “ Maerz ” [= 11 Mar 1831; see Meyen 1834b: 377] in “ Chile ” [= Río Copiapó, ca. 15 km from its mouth, Chile; see below].

Type locality. “Das nördliche Chile ” according to Meyen (1834a: 66), who specified (p. 66) that he shot the holotype “ in der Desierta de Copiapó, im März” (“in the Copiapó desert, in March”). Meyen (1834b: 377) further specified that he collected the holotype where the old road from Caldera to Copiapó entered the riverbed of Río Copiapó, which is an unnamed place lying ca. 15 km from the mouth of Río Copiapó . We thus ascertain the type locality as Río Copiapó, ca. 15 km from its mouth, Chile [ca. 27.34°S, 70.78°W].
