Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland as Gymnothorax rüppelli by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 82), based on ZMH 16483.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 0.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa (south to Mozambique) and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian Islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Western Australia and Loyalty Islands. Found in crevices in coral reefs, 0–40 m depth. Marine.
