Herklotsichthys quadrimaculatus (Rüppell 1837) — Bluestripe herring

Status at New Ireland. New record, based on NTUM 11438 (1 specimen, 47.4 mm SL, St. KR 160, Kavieng Harbour, Kavieng District, 02°35.531’S 150°47.154’E, 2–18 m depth, 23 June 2014). Previously misidentified from Kavieng as Herklotsichthys punctatus (non Rüppell, 1837) by Kailola (1975: 26), based on KFRS F.03486.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2.—General distribution: Red Sea and East Africa east to Samoa and Fiji, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Schooling near coral reefs, estuaries, 0–13 m depth. Transitional water and marine.
