Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland as Scopelus asper by Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes (1850: 454), based on MNHN material; reported from northern and southern New Ireland by Becker & Borodulina (1978: 120).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2, 3.—General distribution: Circumglobal in tropical and temperate seas. Bathypelagic, 0–750 m depth. Marine.
