Ellochelon vaigiensis (Quoy & Gaimard 1825) — Squaretail mullet, yellowtail mullet

Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias, New Ireland as Mugil vaigiensis by Duncker & Mohr (1926: 131), based on ZMH 14953; subsequently reported as Chelon vaigiensis from Tigak Islands, Kavieng by Wright & Richards (1985: 73); record confirmed from Emirau Island by Kailola (1975: 179). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005. KFRS and ZMB material.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2, 4.—General distribution: East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Marshall, Gambier and Marquesas islands, north to southern Japan, south to Shark Bay (Western Australia), New South Wales (Australia), New Caledonia and Rapa. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons, estuaries and rivers, 0–3 m depth. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
