Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Lihir Group, Namatamai District, New Ireland by Fry et al. (2006: 129). Specimens from Kavieng photographed on 1 and 3 June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey; others photographed at St. KVG26 (off western Bauddisson Island) by Serge Andréfouët on 23 Aug. 2014; a video of a specimen taken off Nubilus Island, off southeastern New Hanover, at 3–32 m depth, St. KR 88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 5.—General distribution: Seychelles, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian and Marquesas islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Western Australia, Lord Howe Island, and Tonga. Found in coral reefs, hiding in holes and crevices during the day, 2–40 m depth. Marine.
