Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias as Scorpaena guamensis by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 69), based on ZMH 12736.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 4.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa east to Wake, Marshall and Marquesas islands, north to southern Japan, south to northern New Zealand and Kermadec Islands. Found in rock crevices on coral and rocky reef flats, shallow lagoons, and channels, including tidal pools, 0–15 m depth. Marine.
