Dactyloptena orientalis (Cuvier 1829) —Common helmet gurnard

Status at New Ireland. New record from Papua New Guinea, based on NTUM 11257 (1 specimen, St. CP 4459- 16, 8.5 km westnorthwest of Kavieng). A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 10 June 2009, and at 8 m depth by Dean Tully on 20 Sept. 2015.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2.—General distribution: South and East Africa to Hawaiian Islands and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Western Australia, New South Wales (Australia), New Caledonia, Tonga and Rapa. Benthic, on sandy substrates adjacent to coral reefs, 1–100 m depth. Marine.
