Epinephelus polyphekadion (Bleeker 1849) —Camouflage grouper

Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland as Epinephelus microdon by Kailola (1987b: 230); previously misidentified from Drei Inseln Harbour, New Hanover, and Ningin Island, New Ireland as Epinephelus damelii (non Günther, 1876) by Munro (1958: 161). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and collected by Barry C. Russell on 7, 14 and 21 June 2014.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 3.—General distribution: Red Sea and East Africa east to Marshall, Line and Tuamotu islands, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to northern Australia including Lord Howe Island. Found in coral-rich areas of lagoon and seaward coral reefs, 1–46 m depth. Marine.
