Epinephelus ongus (Bloch 1790) —Specklefin grouper, white-streakd grouped

Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Kavieng, New Ireland by Hamilton et al. (2005: 11). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell on 14 June 2014.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2.—General distribution: East Africa east to Marshall Islands and Fiji, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in coastal and lagoon reefs, including estuaries and mangrove habitats, 5–25 m depth. Transitional water and marine.
