Epinephelus chlorostigma (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1828) —Brown-spotted grouper

Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland by Kailola (1987b: 228); subsequently reported from Lihir Group, Namatamai District, New Ireland by Fry et al. (2006: 130). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2, 5.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Marshall, Tonga and Line islands, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia and New Caledonia. Found in coastal, lagoon and seaward reefs, occasionally on mud bottom, 4–300 m depth. Marine.
