Variola albimarginata Baissac 1953 —Lyretail grouper

Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland by Kailola (1987b: 233); subsequently reported from Lihir Group, Namatamai District, New Ireland by Fry et al. (2006: 130). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell during 14–28 June 2014.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2, 5.—General distribution: East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Marshall Islands, Samoa and Tonga, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Western Australia, Queensland (Australia) and New Caledonia. Solitary in seaward coral and rocky reefs, 4–200 m depth. Marine.
