Ostorhinchus apogonoides (Bleeker 1856) —Goldbelly cardinalfish

Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a specimen in a video of a specimen taken at Alexander Passage, off southeastern New Hanover, at 5–14 m depth, St. KR 96, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); a specimen observed at Bauddisson Island, Kavieng District, 1–19 m depth, St. T 5, on 31 Oct. 2006, by Gerald R. Allen.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Seychelles, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Philippines and Marquesas Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Queensland (Australia) and Loyalty Islands. Found in coastal reefs and on seaward reef slopes, 3– 50 m depth. Marine.
