Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 3 m depth, by Dean Tully on 2 Sept. 2012; a video of a specimen taken at Anelaua Island, off eastern New Hanover, at 3–16 m depth, St. KR 98, in 2014.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Indonesia east to Solomon Islands, north to Sabah (Malaysia) and Philippines. Forming aggregations above sheltered coral reefs, 3–20 m depth. Marine.
