Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias as Apogon snyderi by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 58), based on ZMH 11963; a video of a specimen taken in Steffen Channel, Kavieng District, St. KR 34, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); another taken at Anelaua Island, off eastern New Hanover, at 3–16 m depth, St. KR 98, in 2014.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 4.— General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa east to Hawaiian and Pitcairn islands, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia, Lord Howe and Kermadec islands, Tonga and Rapa. Solitary or in small groups, cryptic in crevices during the day, in relatively clear and silty waters on reef flats, lagoon and seaward coral and rocky reefs, 0–48 m depth. Marine.
