Etelis carbunculus Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1828 —Deep-water red snapper

Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Kavieng, New Ireland by Kailola (1987b: 292); subsequently reported from Lihir Group, Namatamai District by Fry et al. (2006: 129). Specimens observed at Kavieng fish market by Barry C. Russell on 14 June 2014. KFRS material.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2, 5.—General distribution: East Africa, Comores, Seychelles and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian Islands, Line Islands (Kiribati) and Austral Islands, north to southern Japan, south to off Kimberleys (Western Australia), New Caledonia, northern New Zealand, and Tonga. Found above rock bottom, 90–400 m depth. Marine.
