Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Lihir Group, Namatamai District, New Ireland by Fry et al. (2006: 130).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 5.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa, Mozambique Channel, Comores and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian Islands and Society Islands, north to southern Japan, south to off northwestern Australia, New South Wales (Australia) and Tonga. Schooling above deep reefs or rock bottom, 40–400 m depth. Marine.
