Lutjanus kasmira (Forsskål in Niebuhr 1775) —Blue-lined snapper

Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Drei Inseln Harbour, New Hanover by Munro (1958: 191). Previously misidentified from Carteret Harbour, Lambom, New Ireland as Lutjanus bengalensis (non Bloch 1790) by Peters (1877: 831); subsequently from Lihir Group, Namatamai District by Fry et al. (2006: 129). Specimens photographed on 2 June 2013, first dive, during ACIAR Aquarium Survey at Kavieng. Specimens photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 28 Mar. 2007.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 3, 5.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Kiribati (Line Islands) and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to northern New Zealand and Rapa; introduced in Hawaiian Islands. Adults found in coral and rocky reefs, juveniles in seagrass beds or patch reefs, 0–265 m depth. Marine.
