Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Port Sulphur, New Ireland by Kailola (1975: 134); record confirmed by Allen & Talbot (1985: 77). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell on 28 June 2014; a video of a specimen taken from Senta Passage, off eastern New Hanover, 5–16 m depth, at St. KR118, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell). KFRS material.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 3.—General distribution: Seychelles; India east to Marshall Islands and New Guinea, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Solitary or in groups, in coastal or seaward coral reefs, 10–72 m depth. Marine.
