Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a specimen photographed on 4 June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey in Kavieng District; specimens observed at Kavieng fish market by Barry C. Russell during 7–28 June 2014. Specimens photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 3 Sept. 2006; a video of a specimen taken at Martha's Shoal, off eastern New Hanover, at 7–41 m depth, St. KR 122, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.— General distribution: Java ( Indonesia) east to Philippines and New Guinea, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to Queensland ( Australia) and New Caledonia. Solitary or in small groups, in coastal, lagoon and seaward coral reefs, resting in the open during the day, active at night, 1–35 m depth. Marine .
