Parupeneus heptacanthus (Lacepède 1802) —Cinnabar goatfish, redspot goatfish

Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland by Randall (2004: 30); subsequently reported from Lihir Group, Namatamai District, New Ireland by Fry et al. (2006: 130). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005; a video of a specimen taken from Senta Passage, off eastern New Hanover, 5–16 m depth, at St. KR118, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 5.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Marshall Islands, Samoa and Tonga, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia and Lord Howe Island. Found over muddy, sandy, rubble, or seagrass bottoms of lagoon and seaward coral reefs, 12– 100 m depth. Marine.
