Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 8 m depth, by Dean Tully on 5 July 2011; a video of a specimen taken at Nubilus Island, off eastern New Hanover, at 3–32 m depth, St. KR 88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Cocos-Keeling Islands and Indonesia east to Hawaiian Islands and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia, Lord Howe and Norfolk islands. Solitary, in coral reefs and adjacent coral-rubble areas, 1–161 m depth. Marine.
