Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a specimen photographed on 1 June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey in Kavieng District; a specimen photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 6 July 2010; a video of a specimen taken off Nubilus Island, off southeastern New Hanover, at 3–32 m depth, St. KR 88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: East Africa east to Caroline Islands and Tuamotu Archipelago, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia, Lord Howe Island and Rapa. Solitary or in pairs, in coral-rich areas of lagoon or seaward coral reefs, 1–30 m depth. Marine.
