Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a school photographed by Serge Andréfouët off the southern tip of Bauddisson Island, Kavieng District, St. KVG15, on 17 Aug. 2014.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, Indo-West Pacific: South and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Caroline Islands (Micronesia), Mariana Islands and Samoa, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia and to New Caledonia. Schooling in estuaries or freshwater streams, occasionally in coastal waters, 1–10 m depth. Freshwater, transitional water, marine.
