Kyphosus cinerascens (Forsskål in Niebuhr 1775) —Topsail chub

Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias as Pimelepterus cinerascens by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 66), based on ZMH 11990. Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell on 7 June 2014; a specimen observed at Nemto Island, New Hanover, 1–50 m depth, St. T 23, on 7 Nov. 2006, by Gerald R. Allen.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 4.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian, Line and Easter islands, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia, Lord Howe, Norfolk and Austral islands. Found in groups, over hard bottoms covered with algae, on exposed reef flats and seaward coral reefs, 0–24 m depth. Marine.
