Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Irelandby Allen & Erdmann (2012: 540). A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 8 m depth, by Dean Tully on 6 July 2011; a video of a specimen taken at Martha's Shoal, east of New Hanover, St. KR154, at 6–20 m depth, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Maldives and Chagos Archipelago east to Caroline Islands and Samoa, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Solitary or in pairs, in lagoons and on seaward coral reefs and deep rocky reefs, 2–250 m depth. Marine.
